Suhle On Song In Opening Practice

Zagame Autosport’s Ryan Suhle has set the early benchmark to be quickest in Practice One for the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship at Phillip Island this morning.

After a difficult round for the Queensland rookie in Barbagallo, the CAMS Foundation Rising Star was thrilled to start his Phillip Island campaign strongly.

“We got a [test] day yesterday to improve as much as we can, and we made some leaps and bounds,” Suhle said.

“The track’s quite fast actually, the way the wind goes and everything. The car’s been setup perfectly for yesterday and today obviously. My driving has improved a lot, so I’m really happy.”

AGI Sport’s Nick Rowe was just 0.14 seconds off Suhle’s time, but was largely content with his early Friday performance prior to qualifying later this afternoon.

“All went to plan. We came second there, only a little bit behind Ryan so all’s well – we’re only a tenth off,” Rowe said.

“We had a lot of rain overnight, but the track was reasonably dry by the time we went out there anyway.”

Round Three’s winner Cameron Shields was third in opening practice, with the entire field separated by just barely one second during the morning session.

“Opening practice session went, for us, quite well,” Shields said.

“At this stage, early in the weekend, it’s not much at all we’ve got to find.

“It’s practice as well, so nobody really knows what tyres everyone’s on… but so far the car is feeling really good. I’m looking forward to the weekend ahead.”

Championship leader Liam Lawson was only 0.0032 seconds off teammate Shields in P4, but noted the field running a used set of race tyres for the session.

“Towards the start of the session, I was making a few mistakes in the first couple of laps. So it took a while for me to actually put out a good one,” Lawson said.

“I think we’re all on reasonably old tyres, there’s not much you can do to the cars because it’ll all change when you put new tyres on.”

Practice Two and Qualifying will be reduced to 20 minutes, after a significant delay for track repairs in a previous Shannons Nationals session. Practice Two will commence at approximately 1:25pm AEST.
