2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 graduate Jack Smith has become Australia’s latest title winner after claiming the 2017 V8 Touring Car Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Smith secured the championship on Saturday’s opening race, with 140 points eventually separating the Brad Jones Racing driver from his nearest rival Tyler Greenbury.
“It feels amazing to get my first national title and in sort of a spectacular fashion by running out of fuel on the line,” Smith said on v8touringcars.com.au.
“We’ve been working on our opening laps all year and I’m happy with how that [race] went… It means a lot to wrap the title up, to me, the family and the team. It was a massive step for us and I feel like we’ve come a long way and made a massive step for the future.”
It was a clean sweep for the Queenslander, with a further two race wins on Sunday capping off a perfect weekend in Sydney.
The former AGI Sport racer enjoyed a highly successful 2017 campaign, characterised by three out of five possible round wins.
The Super2 Series finale at Newcastle will be Smith’s next focus, where he’ll be competing alongside fellow Formula 4 graduate Will Brown.
