Smith Goes From Karts to Cars

Karting star Thomas Smith has confirmed his 2018 plans and will form part of Team BRM’s driver line-up for the 2018 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

With an Australasian Kart Title to his name, along with runner-up in the Victorian State Cup and Victorian Kart Championship, the 15-year-old has opted to make the leap into circuit racing.

“This year I’m really looking forward to joining the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship with Team BRM,” Smith said.

“My ambitions for this year are to really hit the ground running from my transition from karting to car racing, and hopefully have a promising year with results and see if I’m capable of sticking to an open-wheeler path in the near future.”

With the first round of the 2018 Australian Formula 4 Championship taking place in April, Smith has already notched up kilometres in an open-wheeler abroad.

A third-place finish in a heat on his race debut was an impressive start for Smith.

“I’ve been preparing for 2018 by racing over in New Zealand during the new year break in their national Formula Ford series. This was a great experience to get a feel for car racing and what it’s all about,” Smith said.

Smith joins returning Team BRM driver Aaron Love as part of the South Australian squad’s driving roster. A further three drivers will be confirmed in the coming days.
