Team BRM’s Cameron Shields has topped his fourth consecutive session to claim victory in Saturday’s opening race at Symmons Plains.
After earlier claiming Castrol Pole Position, Shields initially lost out to AGI Sport’s Ryan Suhle on the opening lap. A hard-fought battle ensued, with Shields eventually reclaiming the race lead.
“I had a really good start actually but then shifting to second wasn’t quite right and Ryan ended up getting the turn one before me,” Shields said.
“So the first two laps was really close, we were side by side for a few corners. That was really good to see some close racing but to come away with the win we’re certainly very happy.”
Though pleased to walk away with a healthy haul of points, Suhle knows there’s still a bit of work to improve before Sunday’s two races.
“For me really after the overtake it was more of a qualifying session than it was a race… we were just putting in laptime after laptime,” Suhle said.
“So I’m trying to find a little bit, I’m locking brakes and whatnot… but I was chasing [Shields] out the whole time and he had a few little lockups so I think he was pushing hard too.”
Shields and Suhle were in a league of their own, with 1.4 seconds separating the duo. Aaron Love was the next best of the rest in third.
“That was a really good race. I’m pretty happy with the start I made, that definitely made the race a lot easier,” Love said.
“I don’t really think we had the pace to go any further forward, but I’m very happy that I was able to keep P3. So we’ll move on to Race Two and go from there.”
There was a healthy battle for the final podium placing, with the likes of Jayden Ojeda and Lochie Hughes aiming to capitalise on any mistakes up the front.
“I made a mess at the start so I fell back a few positions, but I had a good battle with both Lochie and Aaron coming back through the pack which was good,” Ojeda said.
“And I got very close into the hairpin, but luckily neither for us came away with any damage. So all smiles, everyone’s really happy, we’ll see how we go for Race Two.”
Hughes’ fifth place made the CAMS Foundation Rising Star the top rookie, leading the way ahead of Zayd Tones, Jackson Walls, Josh Smith, Thomas Smith, and Antonio Astuti.
“The race went pretty good for my first ever race in a car, first ever standing start, everything was a bit different,” Hughes said.
“I was a bit nervous going into it but I got a good start, went from fourth to third at the start and then Cameron and Ryan started battling. I started to catch up to them but then I struggled a bit on the cold tyres.
“I got passed a few times but then I started catching them back up and I had a little battle but just couldn’t quite get it done.”
Sunday will see a further two races take place at 10:30am and 3:55pm AEST, live on Fox Sports 506.
