Josh Smith keen for learning up-curve

Team BRM rookie Josh Smith is looking to vault his way up the rookie standings ahead of round two of the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship at Phillip Island.

Smith admits it was a difficult initiation in his opening round, but the young Victorian felt he needed a full race weekend under his belt.

“Tasmania was certainly tough as we struggled a bit for overall pace,” Smith said.

“It was still a huge learning curve and my favourite thing was being able to gain as much knowledge as I did, which was essentially our goal going into the round.”

While Symmons Plains was unfamiliar territory, Smith heads to Phillip Island more comfortable after completing numerous test sessions at the circuit.

“I am looking forward to racing again at Phillip Island, first of all because it is by far my favourite track. Also just getting back into the car and being able to do what I love is a great feeling,” Smith said.

“My favourite corner at Phillip Island would have to be turn 10. I like it because the hill on entry is so steep and you can really feel the decline in the car.

“In my opinion, it is the most important corner on the whole track. When you get that corner right you know it will be a fast lap, setting you up to take turn 11 and 12 flat and onto the front straight.”

With some 50-odd days between rounds, Smith has tried to keep busy by trying to fill in time to replace the excitement of a Formula 4 weekend.

“Easily a 10 out of 10 on the boredom scale,” Smith said.

“Having such a large break between rounds is definitely tough not being able to drive the car for so long.

“Thanks to Fitness2Podium though, I have been able to do all I can off the track to stay sharp with their training programs.

“Also thanks to Shamick Racing, we have got a go kart to do some test days and races in for time in the seat.”

Round Two of the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship commences on Friday 1 June at Phillip Island, as part of the Shannons Nationals weekend.
