Thomas Smith aiming to match rivals

Team BRM’s Thomas Smith enjoyed the recent opening round of the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship at Symmons Plains, and knows just how closely matched this year’s field of drivers are.

“My favourite memory from Tasmania was how competitive the 2018 field is this year,” Smith said.

“That means every position you make up, you have to earn it.”

With an eight week gap between rounds one and two, Smith admits that time has gone slowly without racing – rating his boredom out of ten.

“Ten. Bored!” Smith said.

“Although I’ve been keeping busy by racing in the second round of Victorian Formula Ford at Phillip Island.”

Like many of his colleagues, Smith enjoys the challenge of Phillip Island.

“My favourite corner at Phillip Island would have to be turn one, since it’s the one of the fastest corners in Australia,” Smith said.

“To set a good lap at Phillip Island, you must be committed and very smooth on the steering wheel and pedals.”

Smith is currently eighth in the overall standings, and fourth in the Burson Auto Parts Rookie standings.

Round Two of the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship commences on Friday 1 June at Phillip Island, as part of the Shannons Nationals weekend.
