Maximum points for Ojeda at Phillip Island

With three consecutive race wins and 75 points to his name, AGI Sport’s Jayden Ojeda has completed a near-perfect weekend for round two of the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship at Phillip Island.

Fastest in every session bar Friday’s second practice, Ojeda bounced back from missing out on the podium at the previous round in Tasmania with a masterclass performance.

“To come here after Symmons Plains and just do what we just did is amazing,” Ojeda said.

“I can’t thank the boys enough, they gave me an awesome car. I’m just happy I was able to provide the goods.

“It was just an amazing weekend and I couldn’t ask for anything much more than what happened this weekend.”

Aaron Love finished a career best second outright for the weekend, making Phillip Island his second consecutive career podium in Australian Formula 4.

“It ended up a good round… we moved up to second for the round, so pretty happy with Phillip Island and now we move on to Queensland Raceway,” Love said.

“That last race didn’t go quite our way. We made some changes after race two, it didn’t quite work for us so we got stuck in some battles.”

Cameron Shields’ lead in the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship standings diminished greatly on Sunday after encountering a driveline problem at the start of the final race.

Shields’ issues helped Ryan Suhle secure the third and final podium place for the weekend.

“Now obviously you never wish something like that on a competitor but at the end of the day it has closed up the championship a lot,” Suhle said.

“Jayden’s really well and truly in it now after the 75 point haul.

“So I think that it’s going to be a really exciting year, two rounds in and we’ve already got three or four people fighting for the championship lead so I’m super excited.”

Team BRM’s Lochie Hughes has gone back-to-back with Burson Auto Parts Rookie of the Round honours.

“We’ve been consistent all weekend. Fifth in race one, fifth in race two from pole – had a bad start,” Hughes said.

“In the last race, I was challenging for third with Aaron [Love] and Jackson [Walls] but unfortunately the tyres went off a bit and I couldn’t stay in the tow which just cost me a bit of time.

“Otherwise a really consistent round, which is good for the championship.”

Sunday’s third race saw some impressive performances for many of the rookies in the field, particularly Patrizicorse’s Jackson Walls who bounced back after a difficult second race to finish fourth in race three – the team’s best result of the year.

Antonio Astuti claimed a good haul of points for the single car outfit, and speedway to circuit racing convert Ardie Jonic finishing each race in the points.

Round three of the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will next visit Queensland Raceway, supporting the Ipswich SuperSprint round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship on 20–22 July.
