Climbing up the reverse grid

Starting from fifth place was no obstacle for yesterday’s opening race winner Jayden Ojeda, who now has a five race win streak after claiming victory in Race Two at Queensland Raceway.

CAMS Foundation Rising Star Lochie Hughes started Race Two from pole position alongside fellow Rising Star Ryan Suhle. A sensational start for Hughes saw the Queenslander lead the way for the opening lap, before Suhle’s experience getting the better of the rookie.

“The start was a bit nuts, starting from fifth it was always going to be a bit exciting,” Ojeda said.

“Everyone got good starts in front of me, so it came down to turn two and three – I managed to get on the inside of Cameron [Shields] and we were side-by-side. I thought if I have any chance of getting anyone, I’ll have to be pretty deep under brakes and that’s just what I did.”

Ojeda once again charged up the field to claim back-to-back race wins, with a one more race to come later on Sunday afternoon. Suhle finished runner-up to Ojeda to secure an AGI Sport 1-2 finish.

“I got Hughesy into turn two and I tried to pull a gap, but Jayden came through the field too quick,” Suhle said.

“By the time he got to me, I didn’t have much for him. He did really everything perfectly when he passed me, covered the switch-back… it was more trying to hold off Love and Shields behind.”

Team BRM’s Aaron Love returned to the podium to finish third, ahead of Cameron Shields in fourth in what was a close battle towards the final stages of the race to decide the podium.

““I was pushing pretty hard. It was definitely a hard race,” Love said.

“Through turn one and two you lose all of the aerodynamic grip because of the car in front, but it was a good race. We’ll move onto race three and go again.”

Hughes was again the top Burson Auto Parts rookie in fifth, ahead of his class rival Zayd Tones, Josh Smith, Jackson Walls, Thomas Smith and Ardie Jonic rounding out the top ten.

The third and final race for the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will commence at 3:55pm, with 13 laps to decide the overall round podium.
