Lights to flag win for Suhle

Saturday Castrol Pole Position winner Ryan Suhle backed up his qualifying performance to win by a staggering seven seconds in the opening race of the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship at Winton Motor Raceway.

Suhle becomes the first race winner at Winton in Formula 4’s history, with his lead undisputed throughout the 12 lap race.

Teammate Jayden Ojeda was an early, and the only, retirement from the race with a suspension failure on lap two.

“That was a really cool race for me. I knew I had to get a good start because Cameron’s had great starts all year. We ticked that box,” Suhle said.

“I just had to pull a bit of a gap on cold tyres, but it’s a little bittersweet for AGI because we won and we had a DNF.”

“I saw Jayden on the side, and it would’ve been an easy AGI 1-2. Things like that happen, it’s racing, it’s the carousel of life,” Suhle consoled.

It was a difficult result for Ojeda to swallow, but is hopeful of recovering some points in this morning’s second race at 10:55am AEST.

“Got pretty unlucky there with the rear right suspension failing on us. Cameron and I slightly touched, but I didn’t think it was going to be enough to do a lot of damage,” Ojeda said.

“That slight little touch put us in a bit of a predicament. I was running second until that happened. It’s going to be tough, because I’m starting from last in race two. It’ll be interesting, I’ve just got to keep my nose clean and hopefully get a few solid points.

“We still have five races to go.”

The retirement is a massive blow for the championship leader, with his lead slashed to seven points with Shields finishing second.

“There was a fair bit going on in the opening laps. There were cars going everywhere but we got through it and managed to finish second,” Shields said.

“It’s bad luck for Jayden, but good for me and my championship hopes.”

Two more races will run at Winton as part of the Shannons Nationals, for Australian Formula 4’s fourth round of 2018. A further three races will be run as part of the championship’s fifth round.
