CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship leader Jayden Ojeda has topped both of Friday’s practice sessions at Pukekohe, in what is the category’s first visit to New Zealand.
Ojeda set the benchmark time in first practice with a 1:06.8016 on used Hankook tyres, with crews to receive a fresh set ahead of tomorrow’s battle for the Castrol Pole Position.
Team BRM’s Thomas Smith was inside the top three for both sessions, with Smith a staggering 0.09 seconds off Ojeda’s quickest time in second practice.
Smith is the only driver to have experienced the Pukekohe circuit, with the young Victorian competing at the venue earlier this year. The result is a huge confidence boost as Smith aims to match the frontrunners.
Whilst quickest in Friday practice, Ojeda will be focused on tomorrow’s Castrol Pole Position and first race as he aims to secure the championship on Sunday. Ojeda is 51 points clear of his teammate Ryan Suhle, with a maximum of 75 points available across three races.
Suhle has kept up with his teammate throughout practice, with only 0.06 seconds separating the pair from this morning’s opening session and third place in the afternoon session.
Patrizicorse’s Jackson Walls made up considerable time in the afternoon session to be placed fourth ahead of Team BRM’s Aaron Love.
Josh Smith, Zayd Tones, Lochie Hughes, Antonio Astuti and Ardie Jonic rounded out the top ten.
In the Burson Auto Parts Rookie of the Year battle, Hughes is 66 points clear of Tones and only needs to score nine points over Tones to lock out the rookie class in tomorrow’s opening race.
Crews will battle for Castrol Pole Position honours at 9:20am NZDT, with Race One to follow at 12:30pm.
Television coverage will be available on Fox Sports Australia and Sky Sport New Zealand, with rolling updates across formula4.com.au and @Formula4AU social media channels.
