AGI Sport have bolstered their Grand Prix line-up with Victorian Josh Smith crossing over to the reigning CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship winning squad for the 2019 season.
With the opening round at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix just over a week away, Smith has already acclimatised to his new AGI Sport surroundings with test days during the summer break.
“I’m very exciting to be racing with AGI Sport because they’re a great bunch of guys, great atmosphere, fast cars and I think it’s going to be a great year,” Smith said.
“This season’s better than ever to do it. We’ll be racing at the Grand Prix, should have a nice field there and hopefully a nice crowd, as well as the Shannons Nationals getting a lot of track time.”
Smith joins a five-car line-up at AGI Sport for the Australian Grand Prix, with the now second-year driver looking to transition from being a rookie to now a senior driver.
“The plan was, from two years ago, was to have at least two goes in Formula 4,” Smith said.
“Any category you definitely need two years, and the second year you can excel. The plan is for this year to try and have a crack for the championship, and to be up the front a lot more.”
The immediate focus for Smith is to perform in front of his home crowd at the Australian Grand Prix, arguably the most anticipated round in the championship’s history.
“My heart starts racing thinking about it,” Smith said.
“I’ve got to jump home on the PlayStation and cut a couple of laps around Albert Park. That’s going to be an awesome round, I cannot wait.”
Round One of the 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will support the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 from 14–17 March.
