Second year CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship driver Tommy Smith is eagerly awaiting racing in front of a home crowd next week at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.
Now as part of Team BRM’s senior driver line-up, including the likes of Ryan Suhle and Lochie Hughes for the 2019 championship, Smith is eager to race at the front of the pack this year.
Smith has fast-tracked his preparations with a stint in New Zealand’s Castrol Toyota Racing Series (TRS) over the summer break.
“I’m really looking forward to coming back for my second year in Australian F4,” Smith said.
“Going over and racing in TRS for five weeks was an awesome experience, with some very tough competition and very quick cars.
“We went there to learn as much as possible in the short space of five, weeks which if you measure the gap from the start to where I finished, there’s definitely a big improvement.”
With the Grand Prix the only track the SCT Logistics supported driver has not raced on previously, Smith is hoping his on-track experience will vault him as a championship contender.
“My expectations are much higher than last year since I now have more experience,” Smith said.
“Hopefully I can challenge for podiums, race wins, and hopefully be in a position to be in the championship title hunt.”
Round One of the 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will support the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019 from 14–17 March.
