DREAM Motorsport’s Thomas Randle has won the opening race for Formula 4 around the streets of the Gold Coast.
With championship leader Jordan Lloyd starting from fourth, after incurring a two grid place penalty carried over from the previous round at Sandown, Randle sought to claw back crucial championship points from Lloyd.
Lloyd’s teammate Zane Goddard almost failed to make the grid after his car appeared to stop during the warmup lap. Racing eventually got underway once Goddard arrived to his grid slot under his car’s own power.
Team BRM’s Lloyd was electric at the start, as he made his way past to snare third position off Tom Grech – who started the race in the Caitlyn Wood Jayco Dealer Team car from Sandown after damaging his original tub during Friday practice.
Grech concluded the race in a solid fourth position. Despite having to swap chassis on Friday, the iQ Option driver has carried over his fast pace demonstrated from Friday practice.
Lloyd attempted to pass Team ToolForce’s Jimmy Vernon in the opening sector on the opening lap and made light contact, however Lloyd eventually snared second place from Vernon by the end of Lap 1.
Vernon completed the race in a strong third position behind Lloyd.
Luis Leeds had an entertaining race, eventually finishing fifth after a thrilling battle between the Preston Hire DREAM Motorsport pilot and Team BRM’s Harry Hayek on Lap 11.
Hayek would later be joined by Will Brown, who charged his way up the field after a difficult qualifying session, however Hayek won the street fight for sixth.
Most of the drivers were setting lap times separated by barely half a second within the 1:17 barrier.
Formula 4 debutant Jordan McGregor finished the race in tenth behind Frankie Maiolo and Zane Goddard, who crossed the chequered flag in positions ninth and eight respectively
Race 2 commences at 12:00pm Gold Coast local time (AEST).
