Saturday Double For Randle

Championship contender Thomas Randle has won a thrilling Race 2 for Formula 4 on the streets of the Gold Coast.

The reverse grid race placed Luis Leeds and Tom Grech on the front row, and the championship protagonists Jordan Lloyd and Randle fourth and fifth respectively.

Grech made a getaway start in the iQ Option / Jayco Dealer Team / AGI Sport car to snatch the lead off Preston Hire / DREAM Motorsport’s Luis Leeds.

A difficult start for Leeds’ teammate Randle saw the Race 1 winner initially drop to sixth behind Harry Hayek, only to regain the position a handful of corners later on the opening lap.

Gold Coast local Zane Goddard in the Team BRM car was an unfortunate visitor to the concrete barriers on Lap 2, and brought out the only safety car period for Race 2.

The 16-year old climbed the tall kerbs in the Turn 6 complex, although he had initially saved the slide but overcorrected into the wall.

The restart at Lap 6 saw the race attrition climb even higher, with the championship contenders Lloyd and Randle side-by-side on the front straight at the restart.

Lloyd attempted to pass Leeds for third position, with Randle tagging onto the back of the nose-to-tail battle. The championship leader then clipped the rear wheel of Leeds, and ultimately the Team BRM driver lost braking efficiency with minor front wing damage.

Despite a new chassis seemingly granting Grech better fortunate than of recent times, a problem forced Grech to retire from a race winning position from Lap 8.

On Lap 11, a four car scrap for the lead was underway with Randle making a pass at Turn 4 on the new race leader Vernon.

Leeds attempted to make a pass on Vernon on the front straight on Lap 12, with Leeds missing the chicane. The DREAM Motorsport pilot then attempted to redress position back to Vernon, before an unknown problem saw the Team ToolForce pilot lose third to Lloyd.

It was an impressive and aggressive showing by Vernon, who attempted to claim back third off Lloyd on the front straight on Lap 14. Although it would be Vernon who would straight line the chicane in this instance, with Lloyd briefly airborne over the ripple strip into Turn 2.

The street battle between Hayek and Will Brown from Race 1 carried over into Race 2, with the Cars Galore / AGI Sport driver of Brown succeeding in fifth position.
