Will Brown Fastest In First Practice

2015 Burson Rookie of the Year Will Brown has claimed the first session of the 2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship, finishing fastest in the first Friday Practice session at Symmons Plains.

The Team BRM pilot was the only driver to achieve a 56 second lap time and was buoyed by the strong showing early in the weekend.

“Pretty exciting first practice session down at Tasmania,” Brown said.

“The track’s a pretty good track, just learning it obviously. There’s no grip levels or anything.

“We’ll just work out throughout the weekend and see what times we can do in the next practice.”

Fellow Team BRM teammate Brenton Grove was impressive in second place, with this weekend being the young Victorian’s first foray in open-wheel racing.

“It was a bit surprising to be honest but I’m happy with that,” Grove said.

“It’s a different track. It’s very sketchy, the car’s very nervous most of the time but for me it’s awesome.

“I’m loving it, I’m loving the car and I’m feeling more at one with the car now than what I did at the test day. So going keep working hard and try to improve.”

AGI Sport’s Nick Rowe was third and found the Symmons Plains circuit exciting if challenging.

“Yeah it’s pretty different, it’s pretty bumpy out there,” Rowe said.

“That turn one’s pretty tricky, it gets you a few times, almost lost it. The car went well, no faults yet so hopefully it keeps going and we can keep going forward.”

Jordan McGregor rounded out the field in ninth and despite an off at the hairpin causing a red flag, McGregor was still finding his feet in the car and circuit.

“First time back in the car since the Gold Coast so we’re just getting used to the terms of the car again and ran through a bit of a programme just sort to sort of run things in for the next session,” McGregor said.

JRD’s Tyler Everingham also completed a successful 16 lap session, with the 15-year-old eager to find more speed this weekend.

“Yeah it was good, took a little bit but I can still definitely find some speed. Just getting used to the track now,” Everingham said.

Practice Two for the 2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship gets underway at Symmons Plains from 1:10pm AEDST.
