First Impressions of Queensland Raceway

Championship leader Will Brown has set the fastest time of the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship’s first practice session at Queensland Raceway.

Setting a 1:13.0082, the Team BRM driver was 0.3 seconds up on his new teammate Harry Hayek and 0.5 seconds ahead of his nearest championship rival Nick Rowe.

Practice Two saw far more sun glistening the track, with Jordan Love fastest with a 1:13.2819 once more ahead of Hayek.

With the majority of the field having never turned a wheel at Queensland Raceway, there was mixed reviews and results after this morning’s opening practice session.

Josh Denton – Team BRM/Pink’s Mitre 10 – P4 – 1:13.5289

“I had a little scare at Turn One!” Denton said.

“I ran wide over the kerb into the gravel, but we came out alright – no damage on the car. The track’s very simple and I’m really enjoying it so far.

Josh Conroy – DREAM Motorsport/Driving Solutions – P6 – 1:13.6982

“Simple, but complex at the same time,” Conroy said.

“The first time I’ve been here, I haven’t even tested or anything. Expectations are limited coming into First Practice but happy with P6. We’re only a tenth off third (Jordan Love) so I’m happy with that.”

Brenton Grove – Team BRM/Grove Hire – P7 – 1:13.8415

“It’s different to what I thought,” Grove said.

“It’s probably a bit easier than I had expected. But there’s still so much to learn and for first practice I had a good feel. The car and the track came to me quicker than I thought it would.

“It’s just a long process now of building and building and building, and we’ll see where we end up later on in the weekend.”

Jack Smith – AGI Sport/SCT Logistics – P8 – 1:13.8560

“The first session at Queensland Raceway’s gone not exactly to plan,” Smith said.

“The track’s pretty green and we’ve got pretty old tyres, so it was hard to get a competitive lap time out. We’ve got some improvements to make on the car. Hopefully we move forward in the next session.”

Tyler Everingham – JRD/Sidchrome – P9 – 1:13.8814

“Great track, very long straights, it’ll be good to capitalise on the tow here,” Everingham said.

“The first corner and the second corner, it’s more of a gutsy corner. I just need to pick up a couple more tenths there, and hopefully I can go quicker.
