U Race It Pole Position: Will Brown

CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship leader Will Brown has secured the U Race It Pole Position ahead of this afternoon’s opening race at the Gold Coast.

Brown was one of only three drivers to set a time within the 1:17 bracket, with Harry Hayek and Nick Rowe the only other two to enter the 1:17s.

“Coming into this round leading the championship, we wanted to try to go out with a bit of a bang but also be a bit conservative,” Brown said.

“To be on pole that’s great. Hopefully with the boys up the front we can race clean and have a good weekend.

“I liked this track last year, but had a bit of bad luck with qualifying…I’ve always liked the track from Day One. It just sort of played into our favour.”

The duo of Brown and Hayek will start Race One from the front row at 3:35pm AEST.

“It’s an awesome track! Especially the atmosphere, you get to ride the mopeds and have a bit of fun,” Hayek said.

“You really have to be on it. I think the harder you push and the closer you get to the walls – the faster you go. You have to be really committed.

“It’s a lot of fun, especially that back chicane that we get to take a lot of kerb. A bit like the go kart days!”

Eighteen laps await the drivers this afternoon in typically balmy Gold Coast weather.

“It’s pretty hot out there! It’ll be hard work but I’m sure it’ll be fun,” Rowe said.

“I went green in the first sector [in the final stages of qualifying] but I just made a mistake at the Beach Chicane and I thought better to bail out than to write it off.”

In this morning’s sole practice session, Brown was again the only driver to break into the 1:17 lap time barrier. The championship leader was half a second ahead of Gold Coast local Zane Goddard, who is making a one-off appearance after claiming four wins and four podiums in British F4 this year.

Goddard was in the top three for much of qualifying, however tagging the Turn Two barriers mid-session unfortunately brought a premature end for the DREAM Motorsport driver.

Fellow DREAM Motorsport pilot Simon Fallon was the fastest Burson Auto Parts Rookie in fifth position, ahead of current rookie championship leader Josh Denton.
