Zane Goddard Completes BRDC British F3 Test

CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship graduate driver Zane Goddard has had an impressive start to his European winter testing programme at Silverstone and Donington.

After racing for Double R Racing in the 2016 British F4 Championship, the Gold Coast teenager sampled the squad’s BRDC British F3 machinery at Silverstone on November 29–30, and Donington on December 1.

Goddard set the fastest time of the opening day of testing, almost a full second faster than the 2016 BRDC British F3 pole position time.

Icy conditions on the second day of testing saw minimal running with only two sessions held, however Goddard set the second fastest time of the day.

Goddard’s most recent test at Donington also yielded the fastest time of the test day by three-tenths. The day was an intensive simulation of a race weekend, with Goddard able to develop the car and tune his own technique.

After spending time adapting to the car and track on old tyres during the morning session, the afternoon session was spent performing two new tyre runs each in a 20 minute qualifying simulation.

Goddard had most recently competed in a one-off appearance at the 2016 Australian Formula 4 finale on the Gold Coast, with Goddard expressing a desire to race in BRDC British F3 in 2017.

Coincidentally, Goddard had raced on the Gold Coast in the same chassis Thomas Randle had campaigned throughout 2015 – who later graduated to an impressive fourth overall in the 2016 BRDC British F3 Championship

With Goddard aiming to stay in Europe in 2017, naturally Formula One is his preferred destination but is open to experiencing other elite categories of motor sport.

“The end goal is definitely Formula One, or World Endurance Championship. I love both of those championships,” Goddard said.

“As well as that, Supercars – it’s a great championship as well, it’s talked about overseas, they love it as well.

“Moving on from [Formula 4], maybe British F3 next year…we’ll see. The goal is to stay in Europe and get some good results there.”

“I’d just love to be a professional race car driver. That would be a dream come true.”
